I think India at its best has both the bane and the boon of democracy. If not for democracy there could never be the audacious number of scams with an even more audacious defense of it all. But at the same time nowhere in the world a Civil Society can raise its voice and get a say in the drafting of bill (though only after government had sufficiently dragged its feet)…
Again the democracy comes into play in the aftermath with cynics calling out to “tweet for the revolution”… Just over the past few weeks I have heard the cynicism and hopefulness of all… and today I am ready to make a contribution of my own…
Let me first put to quite the view of lot who feels that a twitter and a facebook cant inspire a revolution… I would like to remind all of them that Hosni Mubarak had to shut the entire Internet network in his country, there is a facebook page called the Tehrir square which was manned continuously by 20 people who were “leading” the revolution for them… so now that the precedent have been established lets not mock the facebook revolution… better be wary of it…
Next let’s come to the power of Janlokpal… he seems to be scaring a lot of people… well I guess some of them are easily scared… they are scared of people involvement ironically in a democracy. Then come the power issue… why should this law have jurisdiction over the parliament…but I fail to understand why not, are they not ruled by the law of the land, we are making them elite enough by having a different body for them while the lowly CBI watches over the rest of us mortals. They are scared that it can get a very powerful institution… my question remains what is parliament…
All the debating and all the questions have made me realize that most concern here is for the jurisdiction of this bill… because the rest of the powers that are vested with Janlokpal without which a law enforcement agency cannot work. CBI has these powers on us, why are we scared of providing the similar powers to the Lokpal on our politicians. A constant criticism has been against the Mera Neta Chor hai campaign… doesn’t matter the fact that I believe it to be true… I would say that most often than not… we are seeking permission from the ministries to persecute one of their own… that is how the corruption and graft has survived vesting on one of their owns.
Next come the issues of certain people we don’t need and we don’t want raising issues to the media directly… we have uphill battle now… What we have just achieved though difficult was the easiest part… what we do now and
We are saying who will stop the Lokpal from getting corrupt and power hungry… I guess we will have to take a leap of faith here… the similar faith that we have in the political system of the country what stops the PM from not declaring another emergency in this country… I believe that we still to this date have the democracy which will remain our utmost strength…
